Hello poddies,
You might have heard about the situation going on in Nigeria with the #EndSARS movement, empowered by the country's youths. Today I will like to elaborate on what the movement is for and what you can do to create change.
The Special Anti Robbery Squad (SARS) was created in the 90s by the Nigerian government due to an increase in armed robbery in the country. Over the years, this division of the police force has notorious for corruption. There is proof of brutality against youth, rape, and profiling. This is done to people that appear to wear expensive outfits, drive expensive cars, or look put together. Residents are abused for refusing to bribe the police or for looking a certain way and dressing differently.
I believe that this movement goes beyond what is currently being fought for. Nigerian youths deserve better. LGBTQ Nigerian youths deserve better. People should be able to love who they love. Nigerian Youths deserve better education. They deserve proper schooling equipment. Better healthcare. The bare minimum should be an adequate emergency system. But that is not the case. Nigerian needs mental health facilities and programs. It is time that we stop caring about our little corner of the world and fighting for global change.
